Can you edit a Helix preset without HX Edit?
Yes — Helrig opens and edits Line 6 Helix and HX presets in any modern browser, with no Line 6 software installed, nothing to download and no account. Editing a preset and editing your device are different jobs, though: Helrig works on .hlxfiles, and moving a preset on or off the hardware still goes through Line 6’s own tools.
What works in the browser
All of this runs on a phone, an iPad or any desktop, signed out, with the file never leaving your machine:

What still needs Line 6’s tools
Helrig does not talk to your Helix or HX unit from a browser. There is no USB connection to it, so the two ends of the journey — getting a preset off the device, and putting an edited one back — happen the way they always did: export or back up from the hardware or HX Edit, edit in Helrig, then load the exported .hlx back on.
This is a real limitation, not a temporary framing. Direct USB sync exists only in the desktop build, it is still being built, and even there it currently applies to a preset read live from the device rather than to any .hlx you happen to open. Treat Helrig as a better place to edit, not as a replacement for the tool that manages your hardware.
When a browser editor is the better option
- You are not at the computer HX Edit is installed on — a phone or tablet is enough to open a preset and change it.
- You want to read a preset someone sent you without installing anything to look at it.
- You want to see where your DSP is going before you run out of it, estimated per path from each block’s real mono or stereo width.
- You want undo and redo with a named history you can jump back through, rather than retracing edits by hand.
- You want to move a preset between a Helix and an HX Stomp and see exactly what had to change on the way.
And when you do need the hardware side — backups, restores, firmware — HX Edit is still the tool for it. The two are not really competing.
Privacy, briefly
Presets are parsed and edited entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to be opened, converted or rendered, and nothing leaves your device unless you sign in and choose to save a preset to your own library.
